Candle Safety & Care Guide
A clean, slow, and fragrant burn starts with mindful candle care. Because Wish Candle Company creates 100% natural botanical soy candles with lead-free cotton wicks, following these simple guidelines will maximize fragrance throw, prevent tunneling, and keep your home safe.
1. The 4 Golden Rules of Candle Safety
Open flame products require vigilance and caution. Always observe the core fire safety fundamentals:
1. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended: Extinguish all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
2. Burn Within Sight & Clear of Flammables: Keep burning candles at least 3 feet away from flammable items such as curtains, books, paper, beddings, plants, and ceiling fan drafts.
3. Keep Out of Reach: Place candles far out of reach of children and pets. Never place lit candles where they can be knocked over.
4. Stable, Heat-Resistant Surface: Always burn candles on a level, heat-tolerant coaster, tray, or surface.
Never place burning candles on or near electronics, unstable tables, or directly beneath flammable shelving.
2. The First Burn ('Memory Pool')
Soy wax has a chemical memory. The first time you light your Wish Candle Company candle, allow it to burn continuously for 2 to 3 hours until the melted wax pool reaches all the way to the glass container edges.
Why this matters: If a candle is blown out before a full edge-to-edge melt pool forms, the wax will 'tunnel' downward on subsequent burns, wasting wax and diminishing fragrance throw.
Patience on the first light guarantees an even, clean burn down to the very base of your jar.
3. Trim Your Wick to 1/4 Inch (5mm)
Before every single lighting (including the very first burn), trim the braided cotton wick to approximately 1/4 inch (5mm).
• Why Trim: Trimming controls flame height, eliminates excessive flickering, prevents black soot from accumulating on the glass, and stops 'mushrooming' at the wick tip.
• How to Trim: Use a specialized wick trimmer or a pair of small scissors once the candle wax has fully cooled and hardened.
• Clean Wax Pool: Always remove any trimmed wick debris or matchstick residue from the wax pool before lighting.
4. Maximum 4-Hour Burn Duration
Do not burn your candle for more than 4 consecutive hours at a time.
Burning for longer than 4 hours can cause the glass jar to overheat, causing the fragrance oils to evaporate prematurely, thinning the wax pool excessively, and potentially destabilizing the cotton wick base.
If you want to enjoy fragrance throughout the day, extinguish the candle after 3–4 hours, allow it to cool completely for at least 2 hours, trim the wick, and re-light.
5. Safe Extinguishing Technique
• Best Method: Use a metal candle snuffer to gently extinguish the flame without causing hot wax splatters or excessive smoke.
• Gentle Blow Out: If blowing out, blow gently from an angle while holding your hand behind the flame to catch any stray sparks.
• NEVER Use Water: Never use water or liquids to extinguish a candle. Water will cause thermal shock, potentially shattering the hot glass container and causing hot oil splatters.
6. When to Retire Your Candle Container
Discontinue using your candle when 1/2 inch (approx. 1.2 cm) of solid wax remains at the bottom of the glass jar.
Burning beyond this point can cause the flame to heat the base of the glass directly without sufficient insulating wax, creating a fire hazard or cracking the container base.
Jar Upcycling: Clean out the remaining wax with warm soapy water and repurpose your elegant glass jar as a desk organizer, makeup brush holder, or small planter.
7. Authentic Soy Wax Characteristics & Aroma Disclaimer
Our candles are formulated with 100% natural botanical soy wax and premium IFRA-compliant fragrance oils, free from paraffin and toxic chemical hardeners.
• Frosting & Surface Texture: Pure soy wax naturally crystallizes and may develop a frosted surface or slight unevenness after burning. This is definitive visual proof of pure botanical wax.
• Ambient Fragrance Disclaimer: Fragrance profiles (such as Lavender, Amber, Warm Vanilla, or Sandalwood) are created for ambient aromatherapy and home relaxation. They are not formulated or intended as clinical, psychological, or medical therapy.
